The film begins with a free falling protagonist plummeting towards land, and quickly introduces the cast of characters. This is where an issue begins to mount up. With a rather vast and varied amount of characters, none are actually built up. Plus, they are all extremely stereotypical and a couple only have 10-15 minutes to act before they are slaughtered.
The story continues with the party avoiding traps and causing major plot holes. This was a slight downside really for one of the characters in particular, Laurence Fishburne plays a survivor from a past time, and causes one of the biggest plot holes, (though, nicely confused everyone else in the film too,) which is that he has been around for "seven seasons." Would you care to explain how long a season is? They also seemed to flesh him out a hell of a lot within the time he is shown within the film, but yet, they hold back on doing the same for the rest of the short lived cast.
A varied amount of Predators are spoken about, but the two new kinds, (dogs and runners,) make a slight appearance. The main focus is on the original types, just to keep the fans and the casual viewers less confused and happy. They also pull off all the old tricks the Predator has adopted over the years of his initial creation, and yes, there is a bit of 'trophy earning.'
An odd thing about this film, is that the coolest moments are the new ways they try and tackle the Predators. I won't spoil anything, but there is an awesome fight with one later in the movie. The rest of the struggles are just the best moments taken from the original and slightly twisted to look like something new. I think this is the major problem this film has; it is just the 80's version with a slight twist. Instead of military, it's the world's top killers. Instead of a black guy with a minigun, you have a Russian. Even the final confrontation is the similar. He plasters himself in mud, but this time sets everything on fire to confuse the beast.
It hits all the targets for a new Predator film, and does it well - not brilliantly, but good enough to satisfy the fans after atrocious Aliens Vs Predator series. To add, the film is one to sit down, and enjoy. Just sit back and watch as the team of humans try and gang up on the Predator with some neat twists to an old plot.
